PLTW: Project Lead the Way
A couple of weeks ago, I attended the PLTW Summit in Indianapolis, Indiana for Launch Lead Teacher Training with Shannon Donavan, Scituate's District STEAM Coordinator.
What is PLTW?
"Project Lead The Way provides transformative learning experiences for PreK-12 students and teachers across the U.S. We create an engaging, hands-on classroom environment and empower students to develop in-demand knowledge and skills they need to thrive. We also provide teachers with the training, resources, and support they need to engage students in real-world learning." (PLTW.org)
Students who are exposed to PLTW Launch will be engaged, empowered, and inspired. They will begin to learn problem-solving skills through real world problems.
PLTW has three pathways: computer science, engineering, and biomedical science. These are also the three pathways Scituate Middle School students can choose from when they choose to go to Scituate High School. Students are also exposed to PLTW in Middle School through the PLTW Gateway courses. The goal is to expand PLTW into the elementary schools so it will become a K-12 experience building a strong foundation for Middle School, High School, and beyond!
What is a PLTW Launch Lead Teacher?
"PLTW Launch Lead Teachers are instructional leaders who have the capacity and passion to grow in their own practice, as well as provide ongoing guidance and support for PLTW Launch Classroom Teachers. Lead Teachers provide leadership and support in a variety of ways to advance the implementation of PLTW Launch in their schools or districts. They may facilitate training for a group of Classroom Teachers in their schools. Often, they also provide instructional support as they model or co-facilitate student learning, observe and support Classroom Teachers, help with preparations to teach modules, or lead ongoing professional learning for teachers."
"PLTW Launch Professional Development is designed to provide flexibility by offering different training options for teachers and creating a road map to support program implementation and growth for schools and districts." (PLTW.org)
This certification allows me to implement and grow PLTW into our 3 elementary schools, to train Scituate elementary school teachers to become Launch classroom teachers, and to co-teach with those certified Launch classroom teachers.
Launch and the Standards
Launch aligns with both the Common Core State Standards for ELA and Math and the Next Generations Science Standards.
